Furnishing your college dorm room

A college dorm room is a small space with a lot of responsibility! It is a bedroom, a study area, a kitchen, and a place for entertainment, all packed into a tiny 12-feet by 19-feet space. However, with the right tools and knowledge, picking out affordable furniture for your dorm room can be easy and fun.

Sleeping. We know that college can be exhausting, so having a nice place to rest your head at night (or in the middle of the afternoon for a quick nap) is very important. Your bed should be comfortable but also space-efficient. Creating a loft bed and leaving space underneath for a sofa, a desk, or more storage is a great space-saving idea. A sleeper sofa placed under a loft is a great place for relaxing and watching TV or for visiting friends and family to sleep!

Studying. It’s important to have an area of your dorm dedicated to studying and doing homework. Also, books and papers will pile up throughout the year, and a place to organize them will be very helpful. A desk is a must-have for every college student. Keep it simple! A smaller desk with lots of storage space is ideal. You can always put shelving above your desk to add extra storage without taking up precious space. Find a comfortable office chair and add a desk lamp for those late-night study sessions!

Small Space Design. Avoid feeling cramped in your dorm room by following a few decorating tips for small spaces. Adding one large area rug will make the space look and feel bigger. Keeping color themes light opens up space. Also, try to let in as much natural light as possible. Mirrors are not only necessary for dorm living, but they also create the illusion of a larger space. Keep decorating themes consistent so they flow as one large space, not as a bunch of small spaces.
