Transition from a dorm to an apartment

Moving in to your first apartment is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful as you figure out how to furnish it. Read on to find out more about our tips and tricks for finding your style and making it work within your budget.

Cut the clutter. Moving is a great opportunity to cut the clutter and get organized. Before you move into your new place, get rid of things you know you won’t use and try and organize the rest.

Don’t budge on the budget. Don’t go into debt trying to decorate your apartment. Make a budget and stick to it. You can slowly accumulate the pieces and accessories you need over time. Make a list of what you need and then put it in order of priority. Check off things as you get them.

Invest in key pieces. Buy furniture that you know will last you a while.  Look for quality pieces that you can keep for years. One thing that many college students need when they move out of their dorm is a bed. Don’t skimp on a cheap mattress, and look for a durable bed frame in a style that you like.

Tips for decorating tweens rooms

Give them a place to put posters. Tweens are notorious for wanting to hang posters and pictures all throughout their room, which can lead to holes in the walls from tacks or peeled paint from sticky tape. The solution? Create a place in their room for them to hang what they want. Add an oversized cork board and let them have at it.

Create a study space. It’s important to give your tweens a space to study and work on homework assignments so that they build good study habits. Give them a space in their room with a desk.

Add an area rug. We all know kids can be quite noisy.   Add an area rug to help soak up some of the sound, especially if you have hardwood or tile floors. An area rug is also a great way to add color and a pattern to their room. Let them shop with you and give their input on what they like.

Plan for the future. It’s inevitable that as your child ages, he or she will want to make changes in their room. Invest in key pieces of furniture that will grow with them and then let them pick out room accents and accessories that can easily be changed out as their style evolves.

Area rugs for any room

An area rug can be a great addition to any room in your home. Check out our ideas for how to pick them and where to put them in just about any space.

Bedroom. Place an area rug in front of your bed to add some color to your bedroom; or if you have the space, add an area rug to section off a seating area.

Bathroom. Many people now add area rugs to their master bathroom. It can help keep your feet warm on cold tile and help eliminate noises.

Living room. Put an area rug in front of your couch or under your coffee table. Go for something durable since this is a high-traffic area of your home.

Kid’s room. Create a fun play space with a brightly colored area rug for your kid’s room. Look for a rug that is soft enough for them to sit on and that easily hides stains.

Office. An area rug can turn a drab office into an inviting space. Try placing one under your desk or in front of it if you have the space.

Dining room. Go for a darker colored area rug in your dining room to add elegance and hide stains from fallen food or drinks. Make sure that the rug is big enough so that when your guests pull out their chairs they stay on the rug. This will keep the chairs from being unbalanced.

How to make your own wall art

Frame old movie posters for a movie room. Pick up prints of your favorite movie posters and frame them to hang in your living room or movie room. The same can go for book covers, old magazines, record covers and just about anything else you can think of.

Visit your local craft store. Take a trip to the craft store and pick up patterned paper used for scrapbooking, frame them and hang them, and you have instant art for you walls.

Create a picture wall with family photos. Hang frames of all sizes on your wall to create a collage effect. This is a great way to personalize your space and add in your favorite pictures of family members and friends. Try all black and white photos for an added effect.

Mix mirrors. Arrange old mirrors in a unique way to add some flair to your wall. Try putting them in a small space to make it look bigger. Other common places for mirrors include entryways, landings on stairways, dining rooms and hallways.

Put your artistic abilities in action. If you are creatively gifted, buy a blank canvas and have at it! You can create custom pieces to match the look of your space. Even if art isn’t your thing, there are lots of patterns out there you can copy for a more contemporary look.

Dining room table centerpiece ideas

Tired of the same old dining room table centerpiece? Check out our centerpiece ideas below to give your table an instant update.

1. An ornate bowl can make a great centerpiece. Try filling it with decorative balls, unscented potpourri, or just about anything else you can think of.

2. A vase or an arrangement of various vases can make a pretty centerpiece all on their own or you can fill them with fresh or faux flowers. Don’t be afraid to go out of the ordinary; pick out colored vases, interestingly shaped vases or whatever suits your style.

3. Candles are another very affordable centerpiece option. Try buying candles of various heights and arranging them on a tray. You can also look for some decorative candle holders for a fancier, more elegant look.

4. Holiday or seasonal-themed centerpieces can be a great way to get your guests in the spirit of the season, whatever that may be. For autumn, try an arrangement of pumpkins and gourds or a cornucopia. For winter, try a mix of pine cones and berries. Your local craft store can be a great place to look for fillers.

5. Fresh fruit (or fake fruit) is another attractive option for a centerpiece. Fill a clear vase or bowl with seasonal fruit (it will be less expensive that way). Have fun with it and mix fruits of all shapes, sizes and colors.

Decorating a small space

Keep your options open. Allow for quick changes that can make your room multi-functional. In your living room, leave some empty space where extra chairs or seating options can be added if you have a party. If you are buying a new sofa, it may be worth it to invest in a sleeper sofa so that your living room can be quickly changed into a guest bedroom.

Don’t be afraid to fill the space with large furniture. You can use large furniture in a small room, just choose your pieces wisely and don’t overdo it on the home accents and accessories. Also, be sure that it functions well. For example, you want there to be a comfortable amount of space between the couch, coffee table (if you have one) and television.

Deck the walls. The great thing about wall art is that it doesn’t take up any space that you need to fill with furniture.  Try to incorporate a mirror in the room to amplify space and reflect light into the room.

Storage, storage, storage. The smaller the space, the less room there is to store all your stuff. Look for furniture that not only serves its primary function, but also adds some element of storage. For example, there are many coffee tables that have drawers where you can store remotes, magazines, DVDs, and more. If you have a coffee table without drawers, add some decorative baskets underneath for storage.

Five inexpensive ways to decorate your dining room

1. Make your own centerpiece. A great centerpiece can really bring a room together. Try creating a simple flower arrangement or even one with faux flowers to make it last longer. You can also fill a decorative bowl with fresh fruits, decorative balls, and just about anything else you can come up with. Another simple centerpiece idea is some sort of candle arrangement. Note: be sure not to make the centerpiece too tall as it can make it difficult for guests to carry on a conversation.

2. Mix chairs. Mix up your seating options at your dining room table by combining different chairs. Try a mix of old and new or combine chairs with different fabric patterns.

3. Set the table. If you have enough silverware and plates to spare, set the table for an instant update to your dining room. Try adding a table runner and tablecloths too.

4. Mirror, mirror. A mirror can be a great way to fill an empty space on a wall, and it also makes your dining room look much larger than it is. You can try adding one large decorative mirror or many smaller mirrors arranged in a unique way.

5. Go bold. Don’t be afraid to go bold in your dining room. Typically these rooms have much richer colors than other rooms in the house. Try painting a bold accent wall or even using patterned wallpaper.

Five inexpensive ways to decorate your bedroom

1. Keep it clean. Okay, so this isn’t exactly a “decorating” tip, but removing clutter and doing a little spring cleaning can really make a big difference in the way your room looks and the way you feel about it. Try getting rid of anything that doesn’t need to be in the bedroom (stacks of bills, magazines and more).

2. Set the mood with lighting. Lamps and good lighting can give your bedroom a major upgrade. Try adding some elegant table lamps for your end table or add some shine to a dresser with a contemporary-looking lamp.

3. Move the furniture. Getting tired of the way your bedroom looks? Try rearranging your furniture for a quick fix until you have the budget for new pieces. If you have the space for it, angle your bed in a corner or move it in front of a window.

4. Add a rug. An area rug is a great, affordable way to add some color and design to your bedroom. Pick something that complements your current color scheme, but don’t worry about it being too matchy-matchy.

5. Make the bed. Throws and throw pillows are an inexpensive way to update your bedding. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and colors.

Five inexpensive ways to decorate your living room

1. Take a trip (to the bookstore that is). Visit your local bookstore to browse their collection of design books. This is a great way to get ideas and find inspiration for free.

2. Accessorize it. If you don’t have the budget to buy all the furniture you want, spend some time looking for home accents and accessories. The right pieces can really transform your living room. Look for interesting vases, lamps, mirrors, wall art and more.

3. Channel your inner artist. Artwork is a great addition to any room in your house, but it can also be pretty pricey. Try making your own artwork and save your money for the furniture or accents you want to buy. Take a trip to your local craft supply store for ideas and supplies. If art isn’t your thing, try having some family photos printed and framed in a unique way to add a personalized touch to your living room.

4. Paint, paint, paint. Painting your walls is nothing new, but it really is an inexpensive way to update your living room. Try adding an accent wall with a bold color or create the effect of stripes with a matte and shiny paint.

5. Combine new with old. If you have a small furniture budget, don’t be afraid to mix the old with the new. Give your old couch an update by adding new end tables or a new coffee table.
